Fourth of July 2025: What's Open and Closed for the Holiday

United States, July 3, 2025 – As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, July 4th, many are finalizing their holiday plans and checking the operating hours of essential services.1 Here's a quick guide on what to expect for retail stores, banks, and financial markets over the festive period.

Retail Stores: Mostly Open for Last-Minute Needs

Good news for those needing last-minute barbecue supplies or party essentials: major retail chains like Walmart and Publix are expected to maintain their regular business hours on Thursday, July 4, 2025.2 Walmart stores and Supercenters typically operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., while most Publix locations will also be open during their usual hours. However, it's always wise to confirm specific hours with your local store, as regional variations can occur.

In contrast, Costco will observe the federal holiday by closing all its warehouse locations across the United States on July 4th.3 Shoppers planning a Costco run should complete their purchases on July 3rd or wait until July 5th for stores to reopen.

Financial Institutions: Closures and Early Market Finishes

For banking and financial transactions, plan ahead as most institutions will be impacted by the federal holiday.

  • Banks: The majority of banks, including national chains and credit unions, will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2025, in observance of Independence Day.4 While ATMs and online banking services will remain available, branch services and customer support lines will largely be suspended.

  • Stock Market: Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2025. On Thursday, July 3, 2025, the U.S. stock markets will operate on a shortened schedule, closing early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Bond markets are also expected to close early, typically by 2:00 p.m. ET.

Other services like the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not have regular mail delivery or retail operations on July 4th.5 FedEx and UPS will also have suspended or modified services.

Wishing everyone a Happy Fourth of July as celebrations commence!
